It was the mid to late 80’s, The Imperial Brothers hit the streets of the south Bronx with such artist as Force MD’s, Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, Fearless Four, Cold Crush Brothers and the list goes on.
5 years in the street, until Cutting Records signed the group to a record deal and it was on from there.
“We Come to Rock” was their first 12″ from Cutting Records in 1984.
The B side features DJ Whiz Kid and is usually considered the better version of track.
The follow called “Live it Up” in 1985 was more hip hop than its electro predecessor.
Through trials and tribulations the group recorded 2 singles and split ways.
EL’Don, one of the members continued to hit the streets performing at showcases and appearing on several mixtapes and DVD’s with the desire to get back in the industry and hit them again and again.
As of 2012, El Don and Nesto Banks (another member) have reunited and are making tracks appearing on Universal Street Sounds Records ‘Nu electro 4″ compilation album. The two together are showing the rap world of today that they still can reign supreme in this business of music and show the younger rappers how they can produce hits and still move the crowds. In March of 2018, they performed at the Golden Age of HipHop along side… Chubb Rock, Kool G Rap, Special Ed, Mr. Cheeks, Nice and Smooth and a host of other HipHop Legends.
They currently have a few single in rotation overseas in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the U.K.
It doesn’t look like these guys plan to stop anytime soon. As they keep up with the times and show their lyrical and musical skills, The Imperial Brothers will continue to put a dent and be a big part of HipHop history!
